Pat

I joined the Entomology and Plant Pathology (EPP) Department in November 1996, coming to the University of Tennessee from the University of Florida’s Entomology & Nematology Dept. I studied and released biological control agents of pest mole crickets, Scapteriscus spp. At UT I initially worked with Dr. John Skinner, evaluating treatments for control of parasitic mites of honeybees, and developing extension materials for beekeepers. I then worked for the department’s Pesticide Safety Education Program, writing or revising several training manuals. I also served as UTIA’s IPM Coordinator, representing Tennessee in the USDA Southern Region. I’ve produced extension publications on fire ant management and assisted in field demonstrations. I also conducted field demonstrations on grape root borer management and produced an extension publication on this subject. From 2007 to the present I have served as Director of EPP’s Lindsay Young’s Beneficial Insects Laboratory (LYBIL) where we mass rear predators of the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), an invasive and deadly pest of hemlock trees in eastern North America.

Research focus

The focus of LYBIL best described as an operational one, rather than being concerned with research. It is operational in regards to producing a “product”: beetles that are fairly specific predators of HWA. We currently rear three beetle species: the coccinelid Sasajiscymnus tsugae and the derodontids Laricobius nigrinus and L. osakensis. Beetles are provided to federal and state agencies for release on infested trees. Dozens of releases have been made in the Great Smoky Mtns NP, Cherokee NF, state parks and natural areas, state wildlife mgmt areas, and state forests. Beetles have been established at several sites although it is too early to how much they are affecting HWA populations.
