“May the Bugs Be with You” at STEAM night in Oak Ridge

                            Undergraduate students, Kathleen Coffman and Sydney Crowe, attended Community STEAM night at Robertsville Middle School in Oak Ridge, TN, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm EDT on Thursday, May 4, 2023. With more than 30 displays/booths, STEAM night brought together STEM and ART into a fun, educational evening! The theme of the night was “May the Fourth Be with You”. Therefore, Kathleen Coffman and Sydney Crowe spent the evening educating more than 500 students and adults at their booth named, “May the Bugs Be with You”.

Julian Cosner Featured in 2022 Spring issue of Our Tennessee

  Doctoral candidate Julian Cosner has been featured in the 2022 Spring issue of Our Tennessee. In the article “Nipping it in the Bud”, Julian discusses his research and how he wishes to provide research-based information that helps farmers. Cosner is advised by Dr. Jerome Grant and has a concentration in Sustainable Disease and Integrated Pest Management. EPP Professors Attend 2022 Joint ESA-SEB & APS-CD Meeting

    The 2022 Joint Entomological Society of America, Southeastern Branch (ESA-SEB) and American Phytopathological Society (APS-CD) Meeting took place both in-person and virtually March 26-30. With the meeting being held in-person and virtually, it provided members of the organizations the flexibility to attend. Two EPP professors, Dr. Jerome Grant and Dr. Zach Hansen attended the in-person conference, which took place at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Dr. Jerome Grant promoted “entomophagy using an entomological phenomenon: Brood x periodical cicada”. While at the conference, Dr. Grant also served as GamesMaster in the Entomology Games. FYS 129 A Bug’s Life Paints the Rock

                                In a display of creativity, artistic talent, and patience, the undergraduate students of “A Bug’s Life” (FYS 129), led by Dr. Jerome Grant, embarked on a remarkable endeavor to infuse life into the ionic UT’s Rock. Their mission? To transform the Rock into an extraordinary bug-filled painting that would captivate all who saw it. With boundless enthusiasm and a shared love for the insect world, these students proved that BUGS ROCK!

EPP Attends the 2021 Tennessee Valley Fair

    Entomology and plant pathology graduate students Matthew Longmire and Kassie Hollabaugh accompanied by their advisor Professor Jerome Grant had the incredible opportunity to participate in the 2021 Down on the Farm event at the Tennessee Valley Fair in Knoxville. During the event, sponsored by the University of Tennessee Extension, the group shared their extensive knowledge of entomology to young attendees. Despite the necessary modifications made in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s event attracted approximately 200 eager students. With their passion for entomology and dedication to education, Matthew, Kassie, and Professor Grant left an indelible mark on the young minds that day, fostering a deep appreciation for agriculture, farm safety and more.   To learn more about

Accomplishments From a Recent Graduate, Dr. Wanwan Liang

  Dr. Wanwan Liang (class of 2019 and former EPP graduate student in the laboratory of Dr. Jerome Grant) recently published her fourth manuscript from her doctoral research conducted at the University of Tennessee. Her manuscripts were published in four prestigious journals: Biological Invasions, Ecological Modeling, Environmental Entomology, and Remote Sensing. She is currently a Post-Doctoral Associate in the Center of Geospatial Analytics at North Carolina State University and can be contacted at wliang5@ncsu.edu. Dr. Liang was an amazing student during her time here at UT. She excelled academically and socially; she fit right at home here in our department.
