Bug Camp 2023 Inspires Young Entomologists

                            Bug Camp 2023, held at the UT Arboretum in Oak Ridge, TN, recently concluded, marking its triumphant return since the Covid-19 pandemic. The three-day camp, held from June 14- June 16, showcased the importance of insects in our world to 14 rising third to fifth-grade students. Led by Professor Jerome Grant from the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, alongside Michelle Campanis, UT Arboretum education coordinator, and Janet Bigelow, UT Arboretum Society president, Bug Camp 2023 provided a unique platform for children to appreciate the vital role insects play in our ecosystem. University of Tennessee to Host “Garden Buzz: The Celebration of Pollinators” in Honor of Pollinator Week

                              The University of Tennessee Bee Campus Committee, a group comprised of UT faculty, staff and students, in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority and UT Gardens, invites communities across the state to celebrate Pollinator Week at a series of pollinator events, Garden Buzz, on June 20, 2023. Pollinator Week is an annual celebration in support of pollinator health, initiated and managed by Pollinator Partnership. “May the Bugs Be with You” at STEAM night in Oak Ridge

                            Undergraduate students, Kathleen Coffman and Sydney Crowe, attended Community STEAM night at Robertsville Middle School in Oak Ridge, TN, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm EDT on Thursday, May 4, 2023. With more than 30 displays/booths, STEAM night brought together STEM and ART into a fun, educational evening! The theme of the night was “May the Fourth Be with You”. Therefore, Kathleen Coffman and Sydney Crowe spent the evening educating more than 500 students and adults at their booth named, “May the Bugs Be with You”.

EPP Social Committee Hosts the 2022 EPP Winter Awards Banquet

                          On Friday, December 16, 2022, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology held its Annual Winter Awards Banquet at KoPita Authentic Mediterranean in downtown Knoxville. The banquet, which featured a game of trivia and White Elephant, provided EPP students, staff, and faculty the opportunity to celebrate the 2022 year. The event honored graduates Ryan Kuster and Sandra Pena for their achievements and announced the 2022 departmental award winners for their accomplishments and contributions.     On June 30, the Highland Rim AgResearch and Education Center hosted the Tobacco, Beef, & More Field Day. The event brought together beef and tobacco producers to learn more about current research in their respective fields. Taylor Miller, a master’s student with a concentration in plant pathology, and her advisor, Dr. Zach Hansen, attended the event along with other colleagues. National Pollinator Week 2022

  Happy National Pollinator Week (June 20 – 26, 2022). Pollinator Week is an annual event in support of pollinator health. The week was initiated and is managed by Pollinator Partnership, and fourteen years ago the U.S. Senate’s unanimous approval and designation of a week in June as “National Pollinator Week” marked a necessary step toward addressing the urgent issue of declining pollinator populations. As Pollinator Week has grown, people across the planet have pledged to continue promoting pollinator health and well-being through their Pollinator Week events. Through the numerous virtual and in-person gatherings, webinars, planting sessions, garden and farm walks, and monument lightings, Pollinator Week 2022 is geared to be the busiest and best one yet! 2022 End of Semester Social

    Upon the completion of the spring semester, the Entomology and Plant Pathology social committee celebrated EPP students, staff, and faculty by holding an End of Semester Social. The celebration included sweet and tasty cupcakes, fun lawn games, and more. During the event, five graduating students were also highlighted for their accomplishments. Congratulations to you all! Social Committee Hosts the 2021 Winter Banquet

                                    On Friday, December 10, 2021, the EPP Annual Winter Banquet was held. During this event, many students, staff, faculty, and their families celebrated the end of the year. During the banquet, a game of trivia began that featured questions on the subject of entomology, plant pathology, pop culture, and geography. However, in the end, the table featuring Dean Xin, Dr. Bonnie Ownley, Dr. Ernest Bernard, Dr. Windham, Sarah Collins, and their families won first place. Social Commitee Hosts Coffee with Department Head

  Our social committee hosted Coffee with the Department Head. Coffee with the Department Head is a time when our students, staff, and faculty get together in support of each other to discuss topics that relate to research, personal and professional development and so much more.
