Our UT Entomology Team (the UT Blue-tick Hounds) placed 3rd in the Competition, missing out for a tie of 2nd place by only 1 point. Team members were Julian Cosner, Kassie Hollabaugh, Dawson Kerns, and Matthew Longmire (Team Captain).
This week, the Diversity and Inclusion committee is highlighting UTK Alumni, Jerreme Jackson, and EPP MS Student, Amira Cornish!
This week, the Diversity and Inclusion committee is introducing two more scientists that have contributed to American culture, specifically technology. We are highlighting Frederick M. Jones and Dr. Gladys West for their impact on technology both domestic and global. Jones’s innovations revolutionized the refrigeration industry and Dr. West’s research was vital to modern technology, from GPS in phones to precision farming.
EPP is excited to celebrate Black History Month by recognizing the vital role of Black people in U.S. history and science. This week, we are highlighting two black scientists from the past and present, who both embody the theme of “Feeding the World”

EPP is excited to celebrate Black History Month by recognizing the vital role of Black people in U.S. history. We will be sharing historical info, resources, & virtual events all month long! Check our Twitter (@epp_tn) and calendar for updates.
The Forty-seventh Annual Conference of the Tennessee Entomological Society was held on October 9th, 2020. The event kicked off with a student paper competition, graduate and undergraduate. We are pleased to announce that the victors from both categories were from our department! Please give recognition and praise to our hard-working researchers: Graduate Competition 1st Place: Swati Mishra, PhD Student– Characterization of resistance to insecticidal double-stranded RNA in a Colorado potato beetle population 2nd Place: Gary Edwards, MS Student– Distribution of the odorous house ant, Tapinoma sessile, clades in East Tennessee and potential cryptic species status Undergraduate Competition: 1st Place: Marlo Black, EPP undergraduate– The common bed bug, Cimex
Help feed bees so they can help feed us! While Pollinator Week comes to an end for the year, please remember that you can help pollinators every day.
The University of TN, Knoxville was certified as a Bee Campus, USA in March of 2020! To achieve this recognition, UTK has committed to developing a plan to include pollinator habitats on campus and hosting events and learning opportunities to increase awareness about the importance of pollinators
Abstract: Genome wide association studies, GWAS, are performed to determine potential associations between phenotypic (traits observed) data and genotypic (genome) data. Ipomoea batatas, sweetpotato, is a vital crop for combating both visible and invisible hunger, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Understanding the genetic diversity of the sweetpotato germplasm and the genetic architecture underlying agronomic traits is crucial to maintenance and utility of the genetic resources for the crop’s improvement. We will perform a GWAS study to determine potential genes and genomic features associated with traits of interest including disease and pest resistance traits, culinary traits, phytonutritional traits, and morphological traits. We intend to determine potential genes of interests and functional markers for breeding programs.
