Dr. Frank Hale Announces Plans for Retirement

    Dr. Frank Hale grew up in Wilmington, Ohio. As the son of a general surgeon and naturalist, it was only “natural” for Frank to pursue science. He began on his entomology journey in the 1970s at the University of Cincinnati after meeting Dr. Tom Wood, an expert in Membracidae (treehoppers). He eventually accompanied Dr. Wood and his former classmate, Dr. Glenn Morris, who studied Tettigoniidae (katydids), to Costa Rica in 1976. During the day, he was learning treehoppers with Dr. Wood while at night, he was learning katydids with Dr. Morris. This is when Dr. Hale recalls he officially caught the “bug” of entomology.                                 At the Country Classroom event held at Maury County Park in Columbia, TN, Professors Frank Hale and Dr. Alan Windham had the privilege of addressing an audience of over 500 enthusiastic 4th graders. The duo engaged the young minds with captivating discussions about insects and fungi, shedding light on their fascinating world. As the children explored the event, they were treated to captivating fungi photos and an impressive insect collection displayed on the tables. “The insect collection was quite a hit with the kid,” said Professor Alan Windham. Dr. Frank Hale Receives Richard E. Caron Outstanding Entomologist Award

                                We are thrilled to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Frank Hale, professor and Extension specialist in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, for being honored with the prestigious Richard E. Caron Outstanding Entomologist Award! This recognition honors the late Dr. Richard E. Caron, a remarkable Extension entomologist in the department from 1981 – 1991 who dedicated his career to developing ecologically sound IPM programs for cotton and soybean. Dr. Hale’s outstanding contributions to the field of entomology make him a deserving recipient of this distinguished award. Congratulations, Dr. Hale!
